What is FREEmasonry
Since1717
Our Story
With a rich history spanning centuries, Freemasonry stands as one of the most ancient fraternal organizations worldwide. Its foundation lies in the unity of men who, regardless of their religious, ethnic, or social backgrounds, embrace the shared ideals of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of mankind. Freemasonry provides a structured pathway for honorable individuals to enhance their character and conduct, employing a system of degrees, symbols, and opportunities for fellowship.
Our Start
In 1717, the establishment of Modern Freemasonry in England marked a significant milestone, although its precise origins remain shrouded in the unrecorded annals of medieval history. The roots of Freemasonry can be traced back to the guilds of stonemasons that, starting from the late 13th century, regulated the qualifications and standards of their craft. As a stonemason progressed in skill and knowledge, he advanced through distinct ranks: from apprentice to journeyman (now known as Fellow Craft) and eventually to master mason.
At each stage of advancement, the craftsman was entrusted with the secrets of the corresponding level. These secrets encompassed passwords and grips (handshakes) that were disclosed to him only after demonstrating the necessary proficiency, meticulously assessed by a master of the craft. This system ensured that as stonemasons migrated to different job sites across Europe, each individual received appropriate compensation and privileges in accordance with their level of expertise. Simultaneously, clients were guaranteed the assurance of skilled craftsmanship and superior quality.
In the present day, Freemasonry continues to embody this time-honored system of secrets, rituals, and personal growth. While the focus has shifted from constructing physical edifices to the construction of one’s own character, the principles and structure remain intact. Freemasonry serves as a conduit for individuals to embark on a journey of self-improvement and ethical development, akin to the stonemasons of old who honed their craft while upholding the highest standards of integrity and craftsmanship.
Our totals
According to the United Grand Lodge of England, the global membership of Freemasonry surpasses 6 million, with North America alone accounting for 1.1 million members. Remarkably, Ohio boasts an impressive Masonic community, consisting of over 60,000 dedicated Masons and 430 local Lodges. This thriving membership solidifies Ohio’s position as one of the leading states in terms of Masonic participation across the nation.
